what are risk factors
things that increase the likelihood that someone will develop a certain disease, but having a risk factor doesn’t mean that someone will definitely get the disease
what can risk factors be related to
- person’s lifestyle
- presence of certain substances in the environment
- presence of substances in person’s body
what is cancer
caused by uncontrolled cell growth and division triggered by certain changes in cells, which leads to the formation of growths of abnormal cells called tumours
what are the 2 types of tumours
benign and malignant
what is a benign tumour
tumours that stay in one place in the body and aren’t able to spread to and invade other tissues
what is a malignant tumour
cancerous, able to grow and spread in neighbouring tissues
tumours that can travel via the bloodstream and cause secondary tumours in other parts of the body
what are some life-style related risk factors for developing cancer
smoking, obesity, exposure to too much UV radiation, infection with certain viruses
what are risk factors for cancer associated with genetics
inheriting certain genes could increase a person’s chances of developing certain cancers
