B16 - sampling RP Flashcards
1
Q
what must you do after fieldwork in the sampling required practical
A
wash your hands
2
Q
what is the method for random sampling to investigate population size
A
- lay 2 tape measures in sample area at right angles
- use a random number generator to generate coordinates
- at the coordinates, lay the quadrat down and count the number of individual plants of one species in the quadrat
- repeat this process a number of times and work out the mean number of plants in metres^2
- measure the area of the whole habitat and multiply the number of plants by the whole area
3
Q
what is the method for investigating distribution using a transect
A
- lay a tape measure (the transect) across the area to be investigated
- place the quadrat down at regular intervals along the tape measure
- count the number of individual plants of one species in the quadrat
- repeat the transect in a different area at least twice more
4
Q
why is sampling carried out
A
counting all of the individuals of a species can be difficult and time consuming. sampling should be representative of the whole area
