Q

what is the method for random sampling to investigate population size

A
  1. lay 2 tape measures in sample area at right angles
  2. use a random number generator to generate coordinates
  3. at the coordinates, lay the quadrat down and count the number of individual plants of one species in the quadrat
  4. repeat this process a number of times and work out the mean number of plants in metres^2
  5. measure the area of the whole habitat and multiply the number of plants by the whole area

Q

what is the method for investigating distribution using a transect

A
  1. lay a tape measure (the transect) across the area to be investigated
  2. place the quadrat down at regular intervals along the tape measure
  3. count the number of individual plants of one species in the quadrat
  4. repeat the transect in a different area at least twice more

Q

why is sampling carried out

A

counting all of the individuals of a species can be difficult and time consuming. sampling should be representative of the whole area
