B8 - photosynthesis fact test Flashcards
is photosynthesis an exothermic reaction or an endothermic reaction
endothermic as energy is taken in from the environment
why is photosynthesis carried out
to make food in the form of glucose
what is the word equation for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water –> glucose and oxygen
(light energy written above the arrow)
what is the symbol equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O –> C6H12O6 + 6O2
(light energy written above the arrow)
what is glucose used for
C - used to make Cellulose for strong cell walls
R - Respiration to release energy from glucose, occurs in mitochondria
O - used to produce lipids (Oils and fats) for storing in seeds
P - combined with nitrates to make amino acids (then make Proteins) to help the plant grow
S - stored as Starch in roots, stems and leaves, it is insoluble therefore good for storing
how do you get carbon dioxide for photosynthesis
from the air enters the leaf via the stomata
how do you get water for photosynthesis
absorbed by roots via osmosis, drawn up through xylem due to transpiration
how do you get light for photosynthesis
trapped by chlorophyll in the chloroplasts
what are the limiting factors of photosynthesis
- concentration of carbon dioxide
- temperature
- light intensity
- amount of chlorophyll
what is the inverse square law
links light intensity and distance. As distance increases, light intensity decreases. Light intensity is quartered as distance from the light source is doubled)
what is the equation for light intensity
1 divided by distance squared
what does the use of paraffin lamps produce
carbon dioxide and heat
