B1a - microscopy RP Flashcards
1
Q
what is the purpose of the microscopy experiment
A
to study cells
2
Q
what type of cells are often used in the microscopy experiment
A
onion tissue or cheek cells
3
Q
what stains are used in the microscopy experiment
A
iodine or sometimes methylene
4
Q
what is the risk assessment of the microscopy experiment
A
- stains - irritation to skin and eyes - wash hands and wear protection
- lamp - can burn if gets too hot - don’t leave it on for too long
- cutting tissue samples - can cut yourself or others - take care and keep a safe distance
5
Q
describe the method of the microscopy experiment
A
- cut tissue sample
- place tissue sample on microscope slide
- add a few drops of stain
- lower coverslip onto the tissue
- place the slide onto the microscope stage and focus on the cells using the low power
- change to higher powered lens and focus
- draw any types of cell that can be seen
- add magnification scale to diagram
6
Q
why do you need a stain in the microscopy experiment
A
to make certain structures visible
7
Q
why do you have to lower the coverslip at an angle and press carefully in the microscopy experiment
A
to prevent air bubbles
