B2.4 Flashcards
What are 5 physical factors that may affect the distribution of organisms?
~ Temperature ~ Nutrients ~ Amount of light ~ Availability of water ~ Availability of oxygen and carbon dioxide
How are quadrats used to collect data?
~ They are placed randomly on the ground
~ Everything inside is counted
How can you estimate the number of organisms in an area using a quadrat?
Multiple the number of organisms in the 1msquared quadrant by the number of square metres in the area
How are line transects used?
~ The line is stretched between two points
~ Metre intervals are marked along the line
~ The type of plant observed at each metre is recorded
Why should a large sample size be used when sampling data?
To get more accurate data
What is another term for non-living factors?
Abiotic
What is another term for living factors?
Biotic
What is meant by the environment?
All the conditions that surround a living organism
What is meant by community?
All the populations of different organisms that live together in a habitat
What is an ecosystem?
A community and the habitat in which it lives
What is meant by population?
All the members of a single species that live in a habitat
How can quantitive data on the distribution of organisms be obtained?
~ Random sampling with quadrants
~ Sampling along a transect
