B2.3 Flashcards
What is the symbol equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water -> oxygen + glucose
What is photosynthesis?
When plants make their own food using energy from the sun
What 4 things are needed for photosynthesis?
~ Light from the sun
~ Carbon dioxide diffused from the air
~ Water from the soil
~ Chlorophyll in the leaves
What is glucose used for?
~ it’s converted into insoluble starch for storage
~ to provide energy via respiration
~ to produce fat or oil for storage
~ to produce cellulose for the cell wall
~ to produce proteins
What are the limiting factors of photosynthesis?
~ Low temperature
~ Shortage of carbon dioxide
~ Shortage of light
What happens with photosynthesis when the temperature is above 45 degrees?
~ The enzymes controlling photosynthesis are denatured
~ Therefore, photosynthesis stops
How are greenhouse plants encouraged to grow quicker?
~ Increasing the temperature to about 40 degrees
~ Increasing carbon dioxide levels
~ Increasing light intensity
What is the job of the chlorophyll?
To absorb light energy for photosynthesis
How does carbon dioxide enter the plant?
Through the leaves
How does water enter the plant?
From the soil to the stem and into the leaves
How is glucose stored?
As starch
What can glucose be used for?
~ Respiration
~ Cellulose
~ To produce fats and oils
~ To make proteins (along with nitrogen in the soil)
When light intensity is increased on a plant why will it take a few minutes to photosynthesis more?
The plant needs to acclimatise
More photosynthesis =
More growth of the plant
