B1.6 Flashcards
What conditions cause decay to occur fastest?
~ Oxygen
~ Moist
~ Warm temperature
What are the two main types of decomposers?
~ Bacteria
~ Fungi
What are the main waste products of decay?
~ Carbon dioxide
~ Water
Why does decay happen?
Because dead plants and animals still have nutrients in them, but these nutrients need to get back in the soil
Why is oxygen needed for decay?
The microbes need it to respire
What do microorganisms produce by respiring?
Heat
Why is it important to turn compost bins?
~ To allow microbes to mix
~ Allows oxygen to reach all parts
~ Spreads heat which stops it from overheating from all the respiration heat
Where do fossil fuels come from?
The remains of plants and animals millions of years after dying
What contributes to global warming?
~ Combustion
~ Respiration
What happens in the carbon cycle?
~ Green plants and algae photosynthesis and respire
~ Animals respire
~ As microbes eat dead plants and animals they respire
~ Carbon in plants is converted to carbs, fats and proteins when eaten by animals
~ Combustion of wood and fossil fuels
