Axial skeleton I Flashcards
1
Q
Axial skeleton
A
- 80 bones of head, neck, and torso
- 74 bones that form the upright axis of the body
- 6 tiny middle ear bones
2
Q
Appendicular skeleton
A
126 bones that form the appendages to the axial skeleton
3
Q
Temporal bones
A
- form lower sides of cranium and part of cranial floor
- zygomatic process articulates with temporal process of zygomatic bone (zygomatic arch)
- mandíbulas fossa and articular tubercle articulate with mandible (temporomandibular joint)
- mastoid process: posterior and inferior to external auditory meatus
4
Q
Occipital bones
A
- forms lower posterior part of the skull and most of base of cranium
- foramen magnum is located in inferior part
- occipital condyles articulate with first cervical vertebra (atlas) Atlanta-occipital joint
- external occipital protuberance prominent midline projection
- superior nuchal lines: extend laterally from protuberance
- inferior unchallenged lines: inferior to superior nuchal lines
5
Q
Cranium
A
8 bones
- frontal - parietal x2 - temporal x2 - occipital - sphenoid - ethmoid
6
Q
Ethmoid bone
A
- an irregular bone that lies anterior to the sphenoid and posterior to the nasal bones
- sponge-like in appearance
- forms the anterior cranial floor, medial orbit walls, upper part of the nasal septum, and sidewalls of the nasal cavity
- the cribriform plate is located here
7
Q
Facial bones
A
14 bones
- maxillae x2 - zygomatic x2 - nasal x2 - mandible - lacrimal x2 - palatine x2 - inferior nasal conchae x2 - vomer
8
Q
Axial skeleton: skull
A
28 bones
- facial
- cranium
- ear bones
9
Q
Inferior nasal conchae
A
- scroll-like bones from the inferior lateral wall of the nasal cavity and project into the cavity
- know as turbinates: increase surface area of the nasal cavity where air is swirled and filtered before entering the lungs
10
Q
Joints of the head, neck, and face
A
- atlantoocciptal joint
- atlantoaxial joint
- temporomandibular joint
- sagittal suture
- lambdoid suture
- coronal suture
- gomphoses
