  • mandíbulas fossa and articular tubercle articulate with mandible (temporomandibular joint)
  • mastoid process: posterior and inferior to external auditory meatus

A
  • forms lower posterior part of the skull and most of base of cranium
  • foramen magnum is located in inferior part
  • occipital condyles articulate with first cervical vertebra (atlas) Atlanta-occipital joint
  • external occipital protuberance prominent midline projection
  • superior nuchal lines: extend laterally from protuberance
  • inferior unchallenged lines: inferior to superior nuchal lines
