Asexual,Sexual & Meiosis Flashcards
Fragmentation
Body of the parent breaks into pieces & grows back
Binary Fission
Cell splits evenly in half creating two daughter cells
Parthenogenesis
Typically, lay eggs that don’t need to be fertilized by males
What are the advantages of asexual reproduction?
- Don’t have to waste time/energy on finding a mate
- No Gametes
- Stationary
- Produce offspring rapidly
What are some disadvantages of asexual reproduction?
- If environment changes,it’s life-threatening to the species
- Same weaknesses
What are the advantages of sexual reproduction?
- Increased genetic variation
- Greater chance of surviving a changing environment
What are the disadvantages of sexual reproduction?
- Less offspring
- Time wasted on finding a gendered mate
- Energy into producing gamete cell’s
Homologous chromosomes:
Are similar in size and genetic information
Explain how haploid, somatic, and zygote are related.
When the haploid sperm fertilizes the haploid egg,the somatic cell that is produced is called a zygote.
What are somatic cells?
Somatic cells are any cell that are not a sperm or gamete cell
What is the difference between a somatic and a sex cell?
A somatic cell has 43 chromosomes while sex cells have 23
A somatic cell is diploid while a sex cell is haploid.
Why are somatic cells referee to as diploid cells?
Half of the chromosomes are needed to produce offspring.
Metaphase 1
Centrioles line up side-by- side (in the middle of the cell)
