AO3 Education Flashcards
AO3 for Bernstein’s types of speech code
- ignores other factors of educational success such as teachers \+ however , Bernstein recognises both homes and school fails working class pupils
AO3 for material deprivation
- the fact that some children from WC families do achieve suggest material deprivation is only part of the problem
- other factors maybe influential eg religious views
+ some argue that material inequalities have the biggest effect on achievement
AO3 berieter and Engelmann
Indian pupils do well despite not speaking english at home
AO3 Sewell
Not peer pressure but institutional racism
AO3 Cultural deprivation
- it ignores strong black women
- ethnic minority students are not deprived but culturally different
- black students fail cause if racism not low self esteem
AO3 how do pupils respond to labels
+Rather than blaming a childs background. LT shows how teachers sterotypes can cause failure
- danger that we see is its a result of teachers racism and not school racism as a whole
- danger of assuming that once we label, pupils will automatically fail victim to the self fulfilling prophecy
AO3 of new right
- competition only benefits the middle class who can use their cultural capital
- real cause of low standards is social inequality , not schools
What is the correspondence principle between school and capitalist society
- Following teachers instructions= following boss instructions
- lack of control over time tables = lack of control over pay
- competitions eg sports day= competitions eg job roles ( promotions )
AO3 for boys and achievement
-research suggests that the absence of male teachers may not be a major factor in boys underachievement
Read studied the language of teachers and found two types: a disciplinarian discourse and a liberal discourse
Read found that most teachers use the disciplinarian discourse ( this is associated with masculinity ) to control pupils behaviour
AO3 of schools
- post modernists argue that schools now produce diversity , not inequality
- pupils have free will and can reject the school ideology
- sees class as the most important factor , ignores others eg ethnicity
- feminists argue that schools also produce patriarchy
