Antacids Flashcards
What are indications for antacids?
GORD
Dyspepsia
Peptic ulcers
NSAID use
What are the common types of antacids?
PPI
H2 antagonist
Compound alginate
Antacid
What is the commonly used antacid?
Aluminium hydroxide
How does aluminium hydroxide work?
Reaction between aluminium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid forms aluminium chloride and water
Neutralises hydrochloric acid
Inhibits action of pepsin by increasing pH
Side effect of aluminium hydroxide
Constipation
What is the commonly used compound alginate?
Alginic acid - brand name gaviscon
How does alginic acid work?
Combines with bicarbonare to inhibit reflux
Forms a ‘raft’ of gel with near neutral pH
Side effects of alginic acid
Nausea
Constipation
Diarrhoea
What is the commonly used H2 antagonist?
Ranitidine
How does ranitidine work?
Reversible inhibition of histamine 2 receptor
Decreased gastric acid secretion - decreased H+ concentraion
Side effects of ranitidine
Stomach pain
Constipation
Nausea
What are the commonly used PPIs?
Omeprazole
Lansoprazole
Esomeprazole
What is the mechanism of action of PPIs?
Inhibit K+/H+ pump
Inhibits release of H+ ions into stomach
Side effects of PPIs
Headaches Nausea Vomiting/Diarrhoea Stomach pain Constipation
Contraindications for ranitidine
Low eGFR
