angiosperms Flashcards
are angiosperms flowering plants?
yes. They are pollinators and as such they must produce reproductive structures called flowers (or seeds on cone plants) which hold the ovaries.
Flowers are sex organs that contain ovaries and what do the ovaries surround and protect?
embryos inside the seeds.
what is a fruit?
its the structure in the flower that contains 1 or more ovaries. so, when you eat a fruit, your eating an ovary.
angiosperms are classified into what 2 groups?
monocots and dicots.
DIcots have how many seed leafs coating their embryos?
2 seed leafs (2 “cotyledons”- vocab word). MONOcots have only 1 cotyledon (seed leaf) coating its embryos.
are wheat and corn monocots or dicots?
monocots. monocots have one long vein going up each of their slender leaves (wheat, rice corn fields). Dicots have many veins fanning out of their leaves (like a maple leaves, a daisies, tomato leaves, oak tree leaves)
besides having different leaves and different cotyledons (single vs. double), name 3 other differences between monocots and dicots?
- petals on monocots are in groups of 3 or 6 (dicots have 4 or 5 petals), 2. roots are spread out like weeds on a monocot (dicots roots go straight down), 3. the stems of dicots have vascular tissue arranged in a ring
whats the difference between a woody and herbaceous plant?
woody flowering plants have thicker cell walls (trees and shrubs). Herbaceous are not woody (sunflowers)
what’s the difference between an annual, biannual and perennial?
annuals only grow once and never again. perennials re emerge every single year. a biannual will grow 2 times in one year and then stop.
What’s the evolutionary purpose of an attractive and colorful flower
it attracts critters to help move its pollen to the ovaries.
Is a flower a reproductive organ?
yes.
what are the 4 types of specialized leaves on a flower?
- sepals, 2. petals, 3. stamens, 4. carpels
You know what a petal is but what is a sepal and it’s function?
sepals are the original petals that cover the flower bud before it blooms. Inside the sepal are the petals. The petals are meant to attract welcome visitors.
Where are the stamens on a flower and what is their function?
They are long stems (filaments) in the center of the flower with caps on top (anthers) and they make male gametophytes (that make the pollen).
What are the other long stemmed structures called at the very center of the flower?
carpels: they produce the female gametophytes which produce the eggs and seeds.
