Anemias Flashcards
What information does Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) provide?
the average size of the RBC’s in the body
A high Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) is indicative of?
- RBC are larger than normal
- indicative of:
- B12 deficiency
- folate deficiency
- liver disease
- hemolytic anemias
- hypothyroidism
- excessive EtOH
- aplastic anemia
A low Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) is indicative of?
- RBC are small than normal
- Iron deficiency anemia
What is the normal range for Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV?)
80 - 100 fl
What is the normal range for Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH)?
26-34 p/cell
What is the normal Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin conentration?
32-35 g/dl
What are the subjective complaints of pernicious anemia?
- N, appetitie loss, wt loss
- HA
- jaundice
- tinnitus
- bleeding gums
- SOB
- palpitations
- weakness
- AMS
Where is intrinsic factor produced?
parietal cells of the gastric mucosa
What type of anemia is Pernicious Anemia?
megaloblastic anemia
What is the pathology of Pernicious Anemia?
- a lack of intrinsic factor prevents absorption of B12
- B12 deficiency
What is the cause(s) of Pernicious Anemia?
- atrophic gastritis
- antibodies to gastric parietal cells
- autoimmune diseases
Where is B12 stored in the body?
the liver
What are the physical exam findings for a pt with pernicious anemia?
- pale skin
- smooth tongue
- tachycardia
- CHF
- hepatomegaly
- splenomegaly
- ataxia
- abn reflexes
- positive Babinski and Romberg sign
What MCV Level will be seen in a pt with B12 deficiency?
MCV 110-140 fl but may be normal
What are corpuscles?
blood cells (RBC, WBC and platelets)
