Anatomy Lecture Ch 3 Exam Review Flashcards
What types of tissues are in bones?
bone, cartilage, dense connective, adipose, nervous
What are the functions of bones?
support soft tissues, attachment site for framework, protect internal organs, produce movement along with muscles, store and release minerals, hemopoieses blood cell formation, triglyceride storage
What is the structure of bone tissue?
widely separated cells surrounded by large amounts of matrix
What are osteoprogenitor cells?
undergo cell division and develop into osteoblasts
What do osteoblasts do?
do not divide, located on the surface of bones, secrete collagen, calcium, phosphate, and extracellular matrix
What are osteocytes?
mature, principal cells of bone tissue, carry on the metabolism for the tissue, lay down new collagen, calcium, phosphate when there is minor damage, derived from white blood cells instead of osteoprogenitors
What are osteoclasts?
derived from monocytes, contain powerful lysosomal enzymes, break down bone tissue in resorption
