Anatomy - Elbow Joint Flashcards
Elbow joint
- 4 articular surfaces
- 3 bones
- 4 ligaments
- hinge joint (humeroradial joint + humeroulna)
- pivot joint (proximal radioulnar)
Capitulum of humerus + head of radius
Trochlea of humerus + trochlea notch of ulna
3 Bones
Humerus
Radius (lateral)
Ulna (medial)
4 Ligaments
- Joint capsule
- MCL (3 bands)
- anterior band (medial humeral epicondyle to medial coronoid process of ulna)
- posterior band (medial humeral epicondyle to olecranon)
- transverse band (connecting two bands on ulnar) - LCL (tip of lateral humeral epicondyle to annular ligament)
- Annular ligament (radial head)
8 Muscles attachment at lateral humeral epicondyle
Extensors of elbow joint
- Supinator
- ECRB
- ECRL
- EDM
- ECU
- ED
- Brachioradialis
- Anconeus

5 Muscles attachment at medial humeral epicondyle
Flexors
Posteriorly
1. FDS
2. FCU
Anteriorly
- FCR
- PL
- PT
Capsular attachment
Anteriorly: Margin of radial fossa and coronoid fossa of humerus + Margin of coronoid fossa of ulnar + Annular ligament of radius
Posteriorly: Margin of olecranon fossa of humerus + olceranon process of ulna + annular ligament of radius
Movement of the elbow joint
- Flexion
2. Extension
4 flexors of elbow joint
- Brachialis
- Biceps brachii
- Brachioradialis
- Pronator teres
2 extensors of elbow joint
- Triceps
2. Anconeus
Angle between long axis of arm and forearm on full extension?
“Known as carrying angle”
- 170 degree in male
- 167 degree in female
*angle dissapears in full flexion
Structures passes anterior to elbow joint
2 tendons
1 nerve
1 artery
brachialis
biceps brachii
median nerve
brachial artery
Structures passes posterior to elbow joint
Triceps tendon
Structures passes medial to elbow joint
Ulnar nerve
Structures passes lateral to elbow joint
- Common extensors tendon
2. Supinator
Muscles attachment at medial proximal ulna
- FDP
