Anatomical Terms Flashcards
Anatomical position is?
body standing upright, arms hanging down with the palms forward.
Basic planes are?
Median, Sagittal, Axial/Transverse, Frontal/Coronal
What is the median plane?
in the middle: a plane that divides the body into 2 equal halves right and left
What is the sagittal plane?
plane that is parallel to the median plane
What is the transverse/axial plane?
a plane that is horizontal or cross section
What is the frontal/Coronal plane?
plane that is at right angles to the median plane cutting the body into anterior and posterior parts
superior (cephalic)?
nearer head
inferior (caudal)
nearer feet
anterior (ventral)
nearer front
posterior (dorsal)
nearer back
proximal (with example?)
nearer to the root of the structure
e.g. the shoulder is the proximal part of the upper limb
distal (with example?)
further from the root of the structure
e.g. the hand is the distal part of the upper limb
superficial
nearer to the surface
deep
further from the surface
ulnar
medial side of forearm
radial
lateral side of forearm
palmar
anterior surface of hand
dorsum
posterior surface of hand
tibial
medial side of (lower) leg
fibular
lateral side of (lower) leg
plantar
inferior surface of foot
dorsum
superior surface of foot
flexion
folds a joint
extension
straightens a joint
dorsiflexion
pulls foot up at the ankle
plantar flexion
pushes the foot down at the ankle
abduction
away from the median plane
adduction
towards the median plane
ulnar deviation
adduction at the wrist
radial deviation
abduction at the wrist
rotation
where part of the body rotates on its own longitudinal axis (shaking of head)
pronation
rotation of palm of hand posteriorly
inversion
turns the foot inwards
eversion
turns the foot inwards
