Aeronautical Information services Flashcards
What do Aeronautical information services do
- Collects and publishes info about its airspace and facilities within its airspace
- Disseminate info to other AIS of member states
- Collection info other states and relays it to parties within its border
What does AIS ensure?
Ensure the flow of information necessary** for the safety, regularity and efficiency **of civial international air aviation
What’s the responsiblity of each state towards AIS?
Every state must provide AIS
Every state must ensure that the info it provides to its AIS is of quality, adequate and timely availability
how often is AIS provided
- the services can be provided 24 hrs
- if not possible, at least 2 hours before & after a flight and throughout the duration of the flight
- additionally, it should be provied whenever it is requested.
The AIS publishes what?
info from its own state and other states and other relevant sources that are in a format useable by other AIS, ATC and Flight Crew.
it may contain verified and unverified info
all is published at Integratated Aeronautical Information Package
What does the Integratated Aeronautical Information Package contain
- AIP
- AIP amendments
- AIP supplements
- NOTAM
- Prefight Bulletins
- AIC - Aeronotical info ciculars
- summaries & checklists
IAIP is published under which standards
World Geodetic System 1984 Manual or WGS-84
Structure of AIP

AD (Aerodrome)
What’s in GEN

codes, symbols, tables and list of navigation aids available
what services are provided ie SSR, Notam, MET,…
scale of charges for services
What’s in ENR
ATS route
General rules and procedures
Details on airtraffic services airspaces
en route radio aids/navigation aids and systems
en route charts
navigation warnings (prohibited, restricted and danger airspaces)
How are prohibited, restricted and danger airspace identified?

What are AIP amendments
Permanent changes to the AIP
What are AIP supplements
Designated for Temporary changes that are:
- Long term changes (3 months or longer)
2.short duration information with heavy text and imagery
What colour are AIP supplements usually?
Yellow
how often are AIP supplements checked
The checklist is issued monthly
NOTAM
For publishing info that is of **direct operational significance **such as:
- Temporary and short term
- Announce an operationally significant Permanent change (before it gets published in AIP amendment)
- long term temporary change made in short notice
Examples of NOTAL
aerodrome or runways conditions
nav or landing aids
visual aids
obstacle markeings
inteception areas
changes in regulations
defects in manoevering area
hazards like snow, ice, ash
change in level of fire protection or SSR services
changes to availability of fuel, oxygen,
aeronotical services
What are NOT NOTAM
Non imparing/non critical info such as:
Aerodrome routine work & maintenance and runways marking work that don’t impair operation.
failure of lights facilities, or comms frequency if there are others available
non critical obstrutions providing no hazard
lask of apron marshalling or road traffic control
parachuting in uncontrolled airpace under VFR
Who are NOTAMS distributed to
anyone for whome the info is of **direct operational significance **
or who would not otherwise have at least 7 days prior notification
who are the 2 groups that distribute NOTAMS
**International NOTAM Office - NOF **
(for states to exchange notam info internationally)
**Aeronotical Fixed Telecommunications Network (AFTN)
**
Notam checklist is done every how long
every month
What is AIC
Aeronautial Information Circular that contains general admin, operational and safety info that is not part of AIP amendments or Notam
what are the coloured sections of an AIC
Pink - safety info
Yellow - operational info inc. ATS facilities
White - admin info
Moave - national requirements
Green - charts and maps
What is a PIB
**Preflight info Bulletin
**
it’s a summary representation of NOTAMs and other urgent info required for preflight by flight crew that are of significance to the operation.
provided along with relevant AIP info and charts/maps
provided with **info on departure aerodrome ** and its facilities
provicded in plain language
Post flight info
This is info received from flight crew which is related to the state of operation of navigation facilities
every member state must facilities in aerodrome to accept such info and this info should be distributed to the AIS
What is AIRAC
Aeronautical information regulation and control
It is a way to control and regulate the information published in the AIP amendments or supplements periodically using an** AIRAC cycle.**
Explain the AIRAC cycle
AIRAC info is issued 42 days prior to the effective date (publication date)
the info should be received by end user no later than 28 days before the effective date (publication date)
These publication dates are usually set years in advance
what happens on an AIRAC effective date
a ‘trigger’ NOTAM is issued with:
* a brief discription of contents
* effective dates
* reference # of the amendment or suppliment
What happens if AIRAC amendment or supplement can’t be produced due to lack of time?
A notam clearly marked as ‘AIRAC’ will be issued
