What is acne vulgaris
Chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit
Who gets it
14-17 years in females
16-19 in males
Where is it distributed
Where there is the mot sebaceous glands ie face, upper back and anterior back
Clinical features
Comedones - open ( blackheads), closed ( white heads)
Pustules and papules
Cysts, nodules
Erythema
Treatment
Most will resolve in time
Education
1st line mediation: benzoyl peroxide or a topical vitamin A derivatives ( Tretinoin)
2nd line : topical antibiotics e.g. isotretinion, Clindamycin
How does benzoyl peroxide work
It’s a keratolytic, antibacterial
How does vit A derivatives work
Dying effect
For systemic treatment ( antibiotics), how long do you need to take them
6 months
