• marxism, not surprising that unemployed offenders are more likely to reoffend as they have little chance of meeting their needs if they’re solely surviving on benefits
• right realism, states prison works as offenders are rational actors and fear of being jailed acts as a deterrent, however not true as there are high rates of reoffending which right realism fails to explain

• eg Turkey, arbitrary killing, blocking websites, torture (abuse power as they think they’re above the law)
