A

keep someone out of society so they don’t commit crimes eg prison

  • sex offenders have been castrated
  • IPP sentences, prove to parole board that they are safe
  • Crime Sentences Act 1997 links with incapacitation as you will be in prison longer if you repeat offences, thus keeping them out of society

what theory does it link to

A

biological theory
-if people are born criminals, we can’t rehabilitate them can only incapacitate them

right realism
- see it as a way of protecting the public from crime

criticism

A
  • leads to increase in prison population
  • simply ‘holds’ people in to stop them committing crimes, it does nothing to address crime
  • expensive
  • IPP are unjust (crime control model presumes guilt)
