- Parliament- Lords, commons, monarch
- Judges- sets precedents and interpret meaning of statues
- home office- work on problems caused by illegal drug use, safe from terrorism, issue passports and visas
- ministry of justice- protect and advance the principles of justice

law enforcement
A
police
- responsible for enforcing criminal law, investigating crimes, collecting evidence, detaining arresting and questioning subjects
- for minor cases they can issue a caution or a fixed penalty notice but other cases they are sent to the Crown Court

- CPS- advise police investigation and decide whether to prosecute or charge, present and prepares case in court
- Judicial teams- prosecution and defence will present arguments for and against offender
- CC- deals with indictable offences and a jury will decide the verdict and
judge decide a punishment - Magistrates- summary offences they decide the verdict and punishment, appeals from here can confirm or quash conviction
- Appeals from CC- if condition is unsafe it is handled by the Court of Appeal
- Appeals to Supreme- only hears case is the point of law of general public importance of that stake

Punishment

- Prison- confinement + supervision of people, aims to rehabilitate, deterrence, retribution, incapacitation and reparation, supervise and maintain order, duty of care to offenders, TRULY INCAPACITATES IN CATEGORY A (males for rape murder etc) WHEN COMPARED TO CATEGORY D (open prison)
- Probation- must follow rules given by the court if violated can send back to court to impose a new prison sentence
