explain retribution
A
- just deserts, offender should be punished and societies morally entitled to take its revenge
- proportionality, punishment should fit the crime and it leads to the sentencing code so where certain offences are punished with certain sentences being seen as fit for the crime

- right realism with zero tolerance, so being punished for the bad choices you made including very small crimes
- functionalism, moral outrage performs the function of boundary maintenance and remind everyone of the difference between right and wrong

criticisms of retribution

- some argue with restorative justice so. forgiveness may be better because it able to remain within society, fixed tariffs May not take into consideration of certain circumstances and these decide proportionate sentence for a crime to ensure we get retribution such as John Venables case
- however others might argue that if a person does a bad thing they should be punished as it helps them to reflect on their crimes and being punished will make you not do it anymore
