explain rehabilitation
-idea the punishment can be used to change an offenders behaviour so it aims to give an offender another chance and uses vicarious reinforcement programs
theories rehabilitation links to
CBT incorporate behaviourism and cognitive theories as we change the way we act by changing our thoughts
left realism as it argues that it gives people the chance to gain employment to escape poverty
Criticisms of rehabilitation
- right realists argue that people still offend after rehabilitation because of rational choice, Marxists and Merton argued a rehabilitation shift the blame onto the offender when it is society that is the problem, offender must engage for it to work as usually those who have offended is because of deep rooted trauma and they won’t engage because of how sensitive the topic is
types of offender rehabilitation
-anger management, drug treatment and testing orders, family therapy, CBT, psychotherapy, education and training
anger management
calm, 24 session group training program intended to reduce anger and violence, enables males to control their anger and prevent reoffending and early studies should release of high violent offenders with dramatic reduction in a reoffending rates in Canada
drug treatment and testing orders
Methadone, used to help a person stop taking heroin which reduces the withdrawal symptoms such as shaking
Allows you to begin a life that is conventional without being held back by addiction which can lead to less violent crimes, uses the maintenance theory
Family therapy
addresses young peoples offending is to the problems at home or school and they are referred by school or social care, stops reoffending as the relationship between family and young people is an underlying problem so it aims to build a haven for the young person
-Studies show the family therapy reduce reoffending by 20%, 18 month post treatment with long-term maintenance of change over five years
CBT
Usually treats perpetrators of domestic abuse and aims to reduce repeat violence by identifying thoughts and challenging the way people just for the violence, 14% lower chance of reoffending than a control group
psychotherapy
try to change the offenders behaviour to understanding the root cause of crime, Dr butcher worked with stalkers and looked into the childhood ask them about how they felt about themselves and how to manage their emotions, 18 stalkers were used and attended these interventions and two of them reoffended
education and training
CLINK, restaurant which takes prisoners and gives them opportunities in the kitchen, one of the lowest reoffending rates, develops people abilities by giving them skills and qualifications in the kitchen, 225 certificate awarded and 104 graduates released
