criminal justice act 2003 sets of 5 aims of sentencing
- rehabilitation of offenders
- crime reduction
- protecting the public
- making amends to the victim
- punishment of offenders
Life sentence
released after minimum tariff but will be on license for life and if they break these terms they will go back to prison
Indeterminate sentences
IPP, or given a tariff but it is arbitrary – no automatic a right to release and they have to prove to parole board that they are safe, for repeat offenders
Determinate sentence
fixed length of time and usually serve half in prison and a half in the community on license, called post sentence supervision
Suspended sentences
served in community of the two years and gives them the chance to prison a comply with the law, if they break the law they go to prison for the original whole sentence and can be set requirements they have to comply with

some people say no as prison is too easy whilst other say yes as it is worse than death because it takes away freedom
