9.2 Flashcards
What does it mean if a cell is hypertonic?
It has more solute than the outside
What does it mean if a cell is hypotonic?
Has less solute than the outside
What is diffusion?
The movement of molecules from higher density to lower density
what are the 3 types of diffusion?
simple, facilitated, and active
What is special about active diffusion
It flows from low to high and requires energy
Why would an egg in corn syrup lose water over time
the egg is hypotonic compared to the syrup, and so the water goes to the solute.
What are the characteristics of facilitated diffusion?
it flows from high to low and is only able to go through via special proteins
What does it mean for a solution to be isotonic?
It has the same amount of solute on both sides.
To increase diffusion in a cell, you have to _____ the volume and ____ the surface area
decrease, increase
