6.1 Flashcards
What functional group is NH2?
Amino
What functional group is OH?
hydroxyl
What functional group is COOH?
carboxyl
What is a funtional group?
part of an organic molecule involved in chemical reactions.
Explain the difference between hydrolysis and dehydration synthesis?
Hydrolysis is adding the water molecule back to the monomers and dehydration synthesis is taking the water away
What is the difference between monomers and polymers?
monomers make up the polymers. The polymers are broken by the water.
One monomer donates ____ and the other donates ____.
H, OH
What does dehydration synthesis require? Hydrolysis?
dehydration requires enzymes and energy, hydrolysis requires enzymes but produces energy.
What do functional groups do?
Give groups properties, makes hydrocarbons hydrophobic, and increases the solubility of a substance.
What is an isomer?
A molecule of the same chemical formula but different structures.
Give an example of an isomer.
glucose and fructose.
