8.2 Flashcards
What does antiparallel mean?
Two things in opposite directions facing at each other
What bonds are broken by helicase?
hydrogen bonds
What nitrogen bases pair with each other?
A with T, C with G
What is an Okazaki segment?
One of the segment of replicated DNA made by the lagging strand that have to be glued together by Ligase.
What does DNA Polymerase III do? About how fast is it?
It is the main enzyme that matches corresponding nitrogen bases at an impressive rate of 1,000 bases / minute
What does Ligase do?
It connects the Okazaki segments and does one final inspection to make sure everything looks right.
What functional group is able to pair with a 5’?
Phosphate
What functional group is able to pair with 3’
hydroxyl
Why is there a leading and a lagging strand?
Because DNA is antiparallel and is going in opposite directions
