2.1 Flashcards
What are some abiotic factors for a population?
Sunlight, temperature, precipitation, and soil nutrients.
What are some biotic factors for a population?
The competitors, the prey, and the predators.
What is population density?
The amount of organisms in a given quantity of area
What is a population?
A group of individuals of same species in same area in same time.
What is the equation for the mark and recapture method?
Total marked over total organisms equals recaptured with marks over total recaptured.
What are the ways to count population?
Direct count, indirect count, random sampling, and mark and recapture
Explain the process of random sampling.
You divide the area into a grid and count the population in a few of the boxes. You find a density for those and apply it to the whole area.
Bob catches and marks 20 fish in his lake. He comes back the next day and catches 40 fish, of which 10 were marked. What is the estimated population?
80
What are the 3 types of population distribution and how can you tell them apart?
Uniform - creates a pattern that is equally spread apart
Clumped - in large groups or clumps
Random - No pattern and is completely randomized
What is population distribution?
Where the organisms are in an area. There may be a lot of organisms in a specific area due to a good source of food, or vice versa.
