8.4 Flashcards
What is a codon?
3 consecutive nucleotides that codes for an amino acid
What are the 3 types of point mutation?
Silent/synonymous, missense, nonsense
Describe what happens in a frame shift mutation?
a nucleotide is either removed or added, which shifts the whole pattern of codons
What is a nonsense mutation?
It transforms a codon into a stop codon, so it ends short.
What does the tRNA do?
It uses an anticodon to attach to a codon and adds an amino acid
What is the start codon?
AUG (Methionine)
What are the 3 ways a mutation can occur?
DNA Replication, Radiation and chemicals, Viral Infections
What is a missense mutation?
It changes just one codon and one amino acid.
What happens at the A site in Translation?
tRNA matches with codons
