Shaping
Differential reinforcement of successive approximations of a target behavior until the person exhibits the target behavior
Differential reinforcement of successive approximations of a target behavior until the person exhibits the target behavior
Shaping
Successive approximations
a behavior that more closely resembles the target behavior
a behavior that more closely resembles the target behavior
successive approximations
What is the role of shaping in behavior modification? When would you use shaping and when is it not indicated for use?
sometimes the target behavior is not occurring and you need a strategy to generate it
What is the role of conditioned reinforcers in shaping and why are they helpful?
????
What is the role of extinction and extinction bursts in shaping?
you go through a lot of successive approximations so there’s a lot of extinction. Rewarding the next approximation can limit the extinction burst but until they find what the next step is, there could be extinction bursts.
What is the process and steps for shaping?
- Define target behavior
- Articulate why you are using shaping
- Identity the starting behavior
- Choose the shaping steps
- Choose reinforcer for each step (Differentiate reinforcer for successive approximations)
- Move at proper pace
What are the limitations of shaping?
can be time consuming
progress can be slow at times relative to prompting, modeling and other directive methods
Progress is not always linear and may be erratic
Requires a skillful trainer, who can recognize subtly closer approximations
How can problem behaviors mistakenly be shaped?
respond to extinction burst with reinforcement makes the behavior even more severe
ex: shaping complaining in store to tantrumming in store
