9/30/22 - Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures Flashcards
What is an element?
The simplest type of matter with unique chemical and physical properties.
What is a compound?
Multiple elements chemically bonded in fixed ratios.
A compound has properties unique from its constituent elements.
What is a mixture?
Multiple substances (elements or compounds) that are physically intermingled, but not chemically bonded.
2 differences between compounds and mixtures:
- Compound is chemically bonded, mixture is not
- Compound has properties different from its components, mixture retains many components’ properties
- Mixtures can be separated into its components through physical change, compounds cannot
What is a homogenous mixture?
A mixture with no visible boundaries between components
What is a heterogenous mixture?
A mixture with visible boundaries between components
What is a molecule?
A structure of multiple atoms chemically bonded that behaves as an individual unit
Diatomic molecules?
Have No Fear Of Ice Cold Bear
H2, N2, F2, O2, I2, C2, Br2
What is the density of water?
1 gram/mL
