9/30/22 - Accuracy, Precision, and Rounding Flashcards
When rounding, when the removed digit is 5 and the preceding digit is odd, what happens?
It increases by 1
12.75 rounds to 12.8
When rounding, when the removed digit is 5 and the preceding digit is even, what happens?
It remains the same.
12.65 rounds to 12.6
What is accuracy?
How close each measurement is to the actual value.
What is precision?
How close each measurement in a series is to the others.
What is systematic error?
Error that produces values that are all higher or all lower than the actual value. Often caused by a faulty device.
What is random error?
Error that produces values higher and lower than the actual value. Random error always occurs.
What is calibration?
Comparing the measuring device against a known standard. It is a way to counteract systematic error.
