11/15/22 - Atomic Spectra Flashcards
What is a line spectrum?
A series of lines of different colors representing photons of different wavelengths. Each element has its own emission spectrum.
What does the Rydberg equation predict?
The position and wavelength of any line in a line spectrum.
What is Planck’s constant (h)?
h = 6.626 x 10^-34 (m^2 x kg)/s
What is the Rydberg equation?
1/λ = R[1/(n^2)1 - 1/(n^2)2]
R = 1.097 x 10^7 m^-1
What is the work function (Φ)?
The energy an electron spends breaking away from metal during the photoelectric effect.
How do you calculate the energy of a photon in the photoelectric effect?
E photon = Φ + (electron kinetic E)
What are the ways to write the energy of a photon?
E photon = Φ + (electron kinetic E) = ∆E(atom) = hv = hc/λ
What did the Bohr model explain?
Quantized emissions of light and the line spectra of hydrogen atoms.
What is the equation for the difference in energy between two different levels?
∆E = (-2.18 x 10^-18 J)[1/(n^2)final - 1/(n^2)initial]
