10/27/22 - Intro to Thermochemistry Flashcards
What is the First Law of Thermodynamics?
The total energy of the universe is constant; it is not created or destroyed.
What are the components of internal energy?
Kinetic and potential energy. All matter contains internal energy.
What is dynamic equilibrium?
When the rate of a forward reaction is equal to the rate of reverse reaction. There is no more change in the amounts of products and reactants.
In chemical reactions, the change in the position of atoms changes what type of energy?
Potential energy
What is heat?
Energy transferred due to a temperature difference between a system and its surroundings.
What is work?
Energy transferred when an object is moved by force.
What is the definition of a calorie?
The energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree C.
What is the conversion between calories and food Calories?
1 food Calorie = 1000 cal = 1 kcal
What is the conversion between calories and Joules?
1 cal = 4.184 J
1 kcal = 4.184 kJ
