10/26/22 - Reaction Types, Oxidation, and Metal Activity Series Flashcards
What is a combination reaction?
One where multiple reactants combine into one.
X + Y –> Z
What is a decomposition reaction?
One where a single compound breaks into multiple products.
Z –> X + Y
What is combustion?
The process of combining with oxygen.
CH4 + O2 –> CO2 + 2H2O
What is a single displacement reaction?
One where an atom of one element replaces an ion of another in a compound.
X + YZ –> XZ + Y
What is the Metal Activity Series?
A list of metals by their activity or their strength as reducing agents.
What are the most active metals (strongest reducing agents)?
Li, K, Ba, Ca, and Na.
They can displace H2 from water.
What are the least active metals (weakest reducing agents)?
Cu, Hg, Ag, and Au.
They cannot displace H2 from any source.
Where are the most easily oxidized metals located on the periodic table?
Top left of the table.
Which metals on the periodic table are least oxidized (less active)?
Transition metals closer to the right side of the table.
What is a double displacement reaction?
AB + CD –> AD + BC
