10/6/22 - Periodic Table Flashcards
What are the columns in the periodic table called?
Groups
What are the rows in the periodic table called?
Periods
Do elements in a group have similar properties?
Yes
What are Group 1 elements called?
Alkali Metals, they are more reactive
What are Group 2 elements called?
Alkaline Earth Metals, they are less reactive than Group 1
Where are the transition metals in the periodic table?
3 rows of 10 elements each, in the center of the table
What are Group 17 elements called?
Halogens
What are Group 16 elements called?
Chalcogens or oxygen family
What are Group 15 elements called?
Pnictogens
Are atoms bigger on the right or left side of the table?
Left because as protons are added across a period, they pull the electrons closer.
Are atoms bigger on the top or bottom of the table?
Bottom
What forms ionic compounds?
Attraction between charged ions
Do non-metals tend to form anions or cations?
Anions, because elements on the right of the table tend to gain electrons
Do metals tend to form anions or cations?
Cations, because elements on the left of the table tend to lose electrons
What qualities of ions increase the magnitude of their attraction?
Smaller size and higher charge.
