Operations by HAZMAT 1st responders grouped into 4 categories
- Recognition

Placard system using diamond divided into 4 small squares, each noting type of hazard and numbered 0-4
NFPA 704
Two part placard system, divides materials into 9 classes, and assigns 4 digit identification number
United Nations numbering system
Classifies hazardous materials by their PRIMARY danger, and assigns a standardized symbol to ID classes
DOT system
Initial phase of decon where amount of surface contaminate is significantly reduced prior to medical treatment
Gross decon
Minimum resources for gross decon
2 engines and 1 truck (space/personnel permitting)
Where is gross decon set up?
Warm zone, uphill, upwind from Hot zone
Arriving units to HAZMAT incident should
Have windows up and ventilation systems off
Apparatus placement for gross decon
2 engines approx. 20’ apart parallel to each other
HAZMAT rescue possibilities and considerations
- risk to rescuers
- probability of victim survival
- capabilities of unit’s onscene to perform rescue
- knowledge of materials involved
Units on-scene are expected to take __ to protect life and property
