When staging is more than 3 minutes away
There will be Base and a forward location is called Staging
This is typical for high-rise structures

While in Investigative mode
All units will stage 1 to 4 blocks away
Fast attack mode
Attack strategy is offensive or marginal
Under fast attack mode all units will
Assume level one staging
When in command post mode all units will
Assume default level one staging assignments
Default level one staging assignments are based on
Offensive or marginal attack mode’s
When the situation appears to be defensive on arrival or questionable for marginal attack
It is imperative for the incident commander to advise the inbound units not to take the default level one assignments
1st Truck in front of house except 1 and 2
- Multi-story occupied structure with smoke or fire showing, placement shall be to enable rescue from upper floors
- Large volume fire showing (already vented) and/or threatening exposures, placement shall be to enable establishment of aerial fire stream
Whenever an Engine, Truck, or Pumper responds to a mutual aid assignment
it will notify Command of the number of personnel responding
1st Truck in front of house except 3 and 4
- Mobile home parks or small structures (under 1,400 sq. ft.), placement shall be 250 ft. from fire structure out of way of engines laying lines but accessible for equipment or defensive operations, unless unit is used for other functions
- If a truck company is first due, it will follow first arriving engine functions, if it has pumping capabilities
How long does a unit have to go “responding”
0700-2200= 60 seconds 2200-0700= 90 seconds
First arriving company
Placement at discretion of officer, provide size-up, assume command, declare command mode and mode of operation.
Second arriving company
Be prepared to assume command if necessary. If level 1 staging is not wanted, or not ready to give assignments, advise incoming units to stage 1-4 blocks away.
All incoming units
Assume default level 1 staging assignments unless directed by IC.
Units should announce on scene, DO NOT request assignment from IC, assume level 1 staging assignment
Level II Staging
Established by 1st arriving 2nd alarm unit. Large area at least 600’ from scene
Staging Officer
Responsible for tracking units and personnel, and control ingress/egress from staging.
