5.4 chemistry Flashcards
What is cohesion?
Bonding between to HYDROGEN molecules. (water to water)
What is adhesion?
Bonding of hydrogen to any other substance. (water to something)
What is a solvent?
A substance that can dissolves a solute.
What is specific heat?
The amount of energy that it takes for 1 gram of a substance to increase by one degree celsius.
What is heat of vaporization?
The amount of heat needed that turns 1 gram of a substance to a vapor.
What is concentration?
The amount of solute that has been dissovled in a solution.
What does pH stand for?
Potiental of hydrogen.
Hydroxide ion
Also known as OH-
Hydronium ion
Known as H+ or H2O+
What are the five properites of water?
Cohesion & Adhesion to substances, being the solvant of life, ice density being lighter than water, the high spefici heat point, and heat of vaporization.
What are some examples of why each property is important to living things?
High specific heat helps control and regulate termperatures along the coast.
