5.2 atoms bonds Flashcards
What is the difference between covalent bonds & ionic bonds?
Electrons are “fought” over in covalent bonding, and on,y one or two electrons are tranfered to even out the atom.
What is electronegativity?
The measure of how strong atoms attract newly bonded atoms to themselves.
What happens to electrons in ionic bonding?
Typically only one or two electrons are tranfered from another atom to another to fill in any “empty spaces.”
What happens to electrons in polar covalent bonding?
There is an uneven balance of electrons, where one is getting more than the other.
What happens to electrons in nonpolar covalent bonding?
The electrons are disbruted evenly, and there is an equal pull on both atoms.
What is the difference between polar and nonploar bonds?
Polar bonds are uneven, whereas nonpolar bonds are even.
How does electronegativity determine the type of bond?
The different levels of attraction to a newly bonded atom will determine the bond.
