5.3 chemistry Flashcards
What makes a dipole-dipole bond?
When a negative and positive side of a polar relationship attract and stick together.
What is a london-dispersion bond?
A temporary bond between two molecules that causes the two molecules to have an equal distrubiton.
What is a hydrogen bond?
A bond that can only form between- oxygen, flurine, & nitrogen.
How would you rank the intermolecular attractions?`
WEAKEST to STRONGEST: 1. London Dis. (Temporary!) 2. Dipole-dipole 3. hydrogen- main bonds in atoms.
How can you determine whether a molecule will be soluble in water based on its structure?
Atoms with 4-5 C’s will most likely be water soluble. Anything with more won’t be.
How do you determine what type of intermolecular attractions a particular molecule will be able to form based on its structure?
By how the atom is written. If there are two of the same molecules on each side, then the power is balanced.
