2.1 study guide - population density Flashcards
what is a population?
a group of individuals who live and interact in the same area at the same time.
what is the difference between abiotic and biotic?
biotic are living factors in an ecosystem and abiotic factors are non-living factors in an ecosystem.
how can you determine the size of a population?
through size, density, range, or pattern of spacing.
what is population density?
population density is the number of organisms in a certain area or space.
what is population distribution?
the density of organisms in a town, area, or region.
what type of population distribution happens when animals aren’t exactly near one or the other?
random- these organisms/animals are independent and don’t require others to survive.
what type of population distribution happens when animals are very unified in an area?
uniform- these organisms/animals are very territorial and use these ways of living when food becomes scarce.
what happens when the population distribution is very close together in certain patches?
clumped- these organisms/animals stay together to increase their chances of survival from predators.
what is the formula to for random sampling?
org in a sample/area of samp. = total # of org./total area
what is the formula for mark and recapture?
of total org./ total marked = total # of recaptured/ # of org. with marks
does mark and recapture work best for animals or plants?
animals- mark and recapture depends on moving variables
