4.2.3.1 RELIABILITY Flashcards
1
Q
what does reliability focus on?
when is a study reliable?
A
- on the consistency of a study
- if a study is completed in the same way and gets the same results, it can be said to be reliable
2
Q
what is internal reliability?
A
the extent something is consistent with itself
3
Q
what is external validity?
A
the extent a test measure is consistent over time
4
Q
there are three ways to assess reliability
what are these?
A
1) the test-retest method
2) the split-half method
3) inter-observer method
5
Q
what is the test-retest method?
A
- measures external reliability
- gives the same test to the same ppt’s twice (on different occasions)
- if the same result is gained then reliability is established
6
Q
what is the split-half method?
A
- measures internal validity
- splits the test in half and has the same ppt complete both halves
- if a similar result is provided from both halves, then it has internal reliability
7
Q
what is inter-observer reliability?
A
- designed to stop observer bias
- two or more observers complete independent observations on the same study
- if their results are similar then they’re reliable results
