4 Project planning Flashcards
What is work breakdown?
Dividing the project into technically coherent blocks of related activities into levels of increasing detail
What is the purpose of the work breakdown?
Allows for project cost and duration to be assessed
What is a work package?
Bring together related products and functions of the work breakdown
What are the factors affecting the work breakdown structure?
1 Detailed planning left to lowest level of management
2 Project divided into distinct chronological stages
3 Planning initiated early to help in project control
4 Concentrate of planning and not analysing historical data
5 Summarise and asses all available and relevant data before detailed planning
6 Project manager appointed after studies and proposal
What is the purpose of work package costs?
Produce project budget and monitor performance
What is the purpose of a network structure?
To relate the work packages in the overall programme
What are the aims of the network analysis tools?
1 Calculate completion time
2 calculate start and finish date for each activity
3 identify critical activities
4 identify requirements and flow of resources
What is a gantt chart?
It describes the sequence and duration of activities over a time scale. Length of line proportional to scheduled time. It has a calendar format.
What are the advantages to a gantt/ bar chart?
1 Simple 2 Easy to prepare 3 Easy to reschedule 4 Easy to produce resource schedules 5 Easy to read 6 Dates for long lead times seen 7 Short term programmes can be easily developed 8 Wide suitability
What are the disadvantages of a bar chart?
1 do not show the method of doing work
2 can not readily respond to changes
What are the two notations used in network analysis?
activity on node and activity on arrow
How does activity on arrow work?
The circles at each end of arrow represent the start and end of task. The arrow is the task itself. They can be altered to relate well to gantt charts
What are the advantages of activity on node?
1 no dummy activities are needed to control the network logic
2 overlapping and delaying of activities are easily dealt with
3 lead and lag arrows can be used
4 changing network and adding new activities in is easy
5 can use pre-printed node sheets
6 simple calculation of critical path
What are the stages for producing a ghantt chart?
determine: 1 order and manner the work is carried out 2 operations fixed in sequence and time 3 operations which can be moved 4 expected duration 5 calendar format 6 list of activities - match WBS
