2 Project Life Cycle Flashcards
What are the key stages in a project life cycle?
Demand + Initial proposal Feasibility study Design Contracts Construction Testing + Commissioning + Handover + Completion Operation + Maintenance Decommissioning Experience + Records
Give key details of the initial proposal stage
PMT prepare project brief
Objectives of the promoter
Identify how resources are to be deployed
Outline budget + programme
Give key details of feasibility study
Aim to provide if project should go ahead
Extent of demand
Scope of investigation
Financial objectives - return + total cost
Performance required of project
Statutory approvals
Quality of information
Public consultation
Recommended design - change of design gets more expensive after
Give key details of design stage
1 Design brief- approval of contractor designs, health and safety requirements, determination of look and quality of the project
2 Detailed design-construction drawings, basis for determining the cost plan for project implementation stage
3 Construction support
What are contracts for construction?
Formal agreement between contractor and promoter
Give key details of construction stage
Estimating Planning + programming Implementation of building Health + safety Temporary works Cost monitoring Execution of contract Claims and disputes
What happens during testing and commissioning?
Transition from construction phase to operation by promoter. There must be planning, inspection and testing and commissioning.
Give key details of operation and maintenance stage
This time period varies for projects. May be ongoing like the fourth road bridge.
Give a real example of decommissioning stage failure
Brent Spar - Greenpeace vs Shell
What are the advantages of picking the correct deign during the feasibility study?
1 cheaper to make fundamental changes to project during feasibility/ design stage
2 Physical and financial consequences of a change rise significantly during construction stage
3 Effect on employee moral and motivation after changes may be significant
Which party does the testing?
Either the promoter or contractor. It should be specified at the start of construction who is doing it and who is paying
Why does decommissioning have to be considered?
It is a financially significant stage, maybe more than construction
