what is the definition of training?
the process of increasing the knowledge and skills of the workforce to enable them to perform their jobs effectively
what are the different types of training?
-induction training
-off the job training
-on the job training

describe induction training
the type of training is received by an employee when he/she first starts the job
what does the length of induction training depend on?
-the complexity of the job
-the size of the business
-the level or position of the job within the business
what are the advantages of induction training to the staff?
-they get to know their colleagues
-they are made to feel welcome
-they get to know the place of work e.g. rest facilities
-they learn what is expected from them
-they learn about the culture of the business
-it may help them to work safely
-may learn relevant skills to the job
what are the advantages of induction training to the business?
-helps the worker to settle more quickly and to be happier and more confident about working for the business
-the worker will become productive more quickly, therefore increasing output
-the worker will value the time invested in them, which can encourage them to work hard
-health and safety issues may be reduced, which avoids bad publicity and reduces any costs
-increases employee retention which will reduce recruitment and selection costs in the future
describe off the job training
this occurs when employees are taken away from their usual place of work to be trained, it often takes place outside the workplace
what are the advantages of off the job training?
-a wider range of skills or qualifications can be obtained
-can learn from outside specialists or experts
-employees can be more confident in their work
-no interruptions will occur when training takes place
-improves worker motivation and potentially productivity/staff retention
what are the disadvantages of off the job training?
-external training courses can be expensive to attend
-lost working time and potential output from new employee
-employees now have new skills/qualifications and may leave for better jobs
describe on the job training
employers receive training whilst remaining in the work place, it’s often based on observation ‘being shown how to do a particular job’- it can also be provided through computer programs
what are the advantages of E-learning?
-training can take place independently in the work place
-training opportunities online
-suits certain types of training, such as health and safety training
-online tests can assess knowledge
-cheaper for the business
what are the disadvantages of E-learning?
-not suitable for all employees or all types of jobs
-reliant on the motivation of the employee carrying out the training independently
what are the advantages of on the job training?
-cost effective as the staff member stays in the business to complete the training
-employees are often productive
-opportunity to learn whilst doing
-training alongside real colleagues, gaining first hand experience
what are the disadvantages of on the job training?
-quality depends on the ability of trainer and time available
-bad habits might be passed on
-learning environment may not be conductive to the best training
-potential disruption to production and quality standards
