3.2 - Science of observation Flashcards
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
lensmaker, transformed the magnifying glasses used by lace makers en embroiderers into powerful microscopes capable of seeing small organisms . he relalized that the world is filled with microorganisms he called ´little animals ´. he was also fascinated with the mechanisms of sight (the fact that the eye itself is a lens) .
Johannes Kepler
had been equally interested in the eye, in 1604 he was the first to describe it as an optical instrument with a lens used for focusing. He is interested in the fact of vision, not its metaphysical meaning.
Galileo Galilei
first to develop the telescope and use it to observe the heavens. He saw and described craters on the moon, phases of venus and sunspots, he theorized that light takes time to get from one place to another, it travels at a uniform speed that is measurable. his anatomical findings confirmed copernicus´s theory that the earth circeled the sun.
