3.2 - Artwork of architecture Flashcards
Head of the French Academy (Colbert) invited Bernini to Paris to present plans for the facade for the new east wing of the royal palace of the Louvre > Bernini´s approach was deemed too radical > French architect didnt want the design of a french palace to fall to an italian > colbert appointed a french council (architect louis le vau, painter charles le brun, architect claude perrault.
result : a sctrict lineair classicism, center of facade looks like a roman temple with corinthian columns, wings of paired columns extended on each side, and the buildings ends in forms similair of a roman triumphal arch.
Louis XIV turned his attention here. Begun in 1669 by Le Vau who managed the design the garden facade but died within the year. Jules Hardouinmansart took over and enlarged the palace to the length of 1,903 feet.
the house of mirrors, one of the many splendid rooms of the palace was designed about 1680 by hardouin-mansart, le brun and antoine coysevox. it has 17 arched mirrors and furnishes with silver furniture. it is one of the ultimate expamples of french baroque elegance.
England was very behind the continent artistically, but Sir christopher wren brought it back to the fore. During the great fire of 1666, much of london was destroyed.he joined the royal commission for rebuilding the city, and designed many local churches, st. paul´s cathedral was one of them (built 1675-1710).
Its regarded as a baroque reintepretation of the ancient roman pantheon. he designed a dome like that of the pantheon, but raised it high on double drums and topped it with a lantern, and modeled his triangular pediment on the pantheon´s but supported it on 2 stories of columns which are grouped in pairs (characteristic of the baroque). the lower story of columns is as wide as the nave and aisles, the upper as wide as the nave. very baroque are the broken silhouettes of the towers at each corner.
It´s also similair to the St. Peter´s in the north. like the dome of st. peter´s in rome, the dome of st. paul´s is as wide as the nave and asiles. Although smaller than st. peter´s, st.paul´s is considered artistically superior for its stylistic consistency. its also the only major cathedral in western europe to be completed by the one who designed it. st. peter´s lacks small-scale features with which to interpret its vastness; st. paul´s includes such details on both exterior and interior.
