3.1 - Artwork of Painting of Italy Flashcards
By Caravaggio.
Bohemian artist, great religious painter. Painted the calling of st. matthew in about 1599-1602 for the private chapel of the contarelli family in the church of san luigi dei francesi in rome. Large painting, depicts the climatic moment of matthew´s calling. The biblical tale, shown in the everyday environment of a Roman tavern, is enacted by people who could have been caravaggio´s contemporaries. Matthew and his associates are richly attired, but 2 figures at the right are in rags. Jesus´ halo is barely visible. Still there´s a religious atmosphere, created by caravaggio´s dramatic use of light (tenebrism), a dark manner in which light and dark contrast strongly, the highlights picking out only what the artist wants the viewer to see. The light comes from above, but no light source is shown.
by Artemisia Gentileschi.
Here you can also see the emotional and dramatic side of the Baroque. Her style seems to have been influenced by her father, a painter in Caravaggio´s style. She was known as a Caravaggisti or night painters, whose work was identifiable by the use of tenebrism.
Her paintings often depicted the popular biblical subjects of Bathsheba and David and of Judith and Holofernes.
Judith slaying holofernes, painted ca. 1620, conveys intrigue and violence. The jewish widow Judith saved her people by bringing their leader Holofernes into a tent where he drank himself to sleep. Then she cut his head off with his own sword. The drama is enhanced by the dark tenebristic lighting that spotlights the actors.
Her paintings have been linked to sexual assault.
