2.1 - Artworks of painting Flashcards
by robert campin.
first important example of oil painting, still looks medieval because of the large size of mary and gabriel (indicates their importance).
Introduces new attention to details of reality by oil painting. Mixing technique of campin : egg tempera for underpainting and painted over in oil. The painting is triptych (3-paneled painting), this protects the painting inside and the piece can stand. In the painting the religious subject is combined with observation of daily life (depiction of annunication but not in holy realm, but at home). Very iconographic with a lot of details.
By Jan van Eyck.
completed in 1432, is a polyptych painting (painting consisting of multiple panels). it has 26 panels. focuses on salvation and redemption of humankind. central panel lower : depicts adoration of the lamb. there are various body types and facial expressions (individualize figures). There is realism : use of atmospheric perspective. Colors and edges of objects in background are not as intense as the foreground (differs from merode altarpiece). Figures are highly naturalistic.
By jan van eyck. expressed prosperity of the merchant class in 15th century : lavish textiles and finery, canopy bed (furniture of estate, sign of owner´s prestige), couple´s shoes are off which means that they stand on holy ground. Painting is replete with objects that hold iconographic significance (disguised symbolism).
By hieronymus bosch.
His work displays an extraordinary imagination and higly personal style, his painting is teeming with bizarre creatures (part human part animal). Painting alla prima (without any preliminary drawing). Other flemish painters stressed solid dimensionality, bosch´s paintings look fragile and delicate. While others painted illusions of nature, bosch painted a phantasmagorical world. He was less interested in light and shadow and more with the moralistic import of his subjects.
hay wain is a triptych painted ca 1495-1500. Painting is a satire on the evils of greed.
